Mechanical Characterization and Modeling of Large-Format Lithium-Ion Battery Cell Electrodes and Separators
We investigated porous graphite and NCA electrodes as well as PE separators with respect to their stress-strain response. Using more than one mechanical (de)compression cycle, we highlighted a significant dependency of the stress-strain behavior on the testing procedure. Additionally, the materials tend to be stiffer with increasing nominal stress (applied force).
Utilizing a poroelastic mechanical model, we successfully predicted the non-linear behavior of these materials with high accuracy, achieving a normalized root-mean-squared error of less than 5.5%.
