Due to variations in the production of Li-ion cells there are slight differences in the capacity of the cells and the state of charges will drift apart during discharging. This procedure is supported by different temperatures in the battery pack. The capacity of the battery pack is limited by the capacity of the weakest cell. Hence the cells have to balance during charging.
