"Optimal Parallel Battery - OparaBatt"

Most modern lithium-ion storages do not consist of a single battery cell, but of many smaller or larger cells, which are connected in series and often in parallel. The OparaBatt project specifically addresses the challenges of parallel connection of battery cells. The research project focuses on the optimized design of a system consisting of single battery cells.
Within a parallel connection of battery cells, the current does not distribute equally across the cells. This leads to a reduction in the usable energy, power limit and the lifetime of the storage. The aim of the project partners Invenox GmbH and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is to know, understand and quantify the effects that lead to asymmetric current distribution. This will be achieved by a combination of different simulation methods combined with measurements at the cell and system level. The results are used to derive design guidelines for an optimized battery system.
