Research
The turnaround in energy policy from fossil fuels to renewable energy is one of the major challenges in the 21st century. This transition evokes numerous technical, economic, legal and even social changes at both local and global levels.
At the Chair of Renewable and Sustainable Energy Systems, models for different scales of time and space are developed to describe and understand present and future processes of change. The institute’s main focus is the developmentof advanced methods for modeling technical and economical interactions to find optimal solutions concerning economic benefits, external costs and environmental impacts. The investigated models can deliver important results, like the storage capacity needed at minimal costs in relation to different grid expansion scenarios and varying shares of fluctuating power sources, such as wind and sun.
Key issues
- Modeling of energy systems on different scales, e.g. micro grids, regional and global energy systems
- Analysis and evaluation of technical systems, taking into account socio-economic aspects and sustainability
- Modeling and implementation of distributed energy systems, focusing on developing countries
