Misselhorn
Within the framework of the Misselhorn project, the use of waste heat at low temperatures with the novel Misselhorn cycle is examined. The Institute deals with the thermo-fluid dynamic backgrounds and the simulation of the pilot test plant, operated by the Misselhorn Maschinenwerke MWM GmbH.
Motivation
In addition to renewable energy, also the economic use of waste heat gets in the focus of research. Since waste heat is often available at very low temperature levels, it cannot usually be used efficiently and is discharged to the environment, sometimes even at additional costs. This unused energy falls at the expense of overall efficiency. Use of this residual heat can increase the efficiency of the plants and the resources will be spared.
Process Description
The process developed by MWN uses an organic working medium similar to a classic ORC. The evaporation of the working medium occurs dynamically with an offset in time in several parallely arranged evaporators. In contrast to the continuous operation, the process consists of batchwise filling, evaporation and discharge. The residence time available for the pressure build-up in the evaporator is such that the process can also be operated at lower temperatures below 100 °C . The pressure build-up is carried out completely by isochoric evaporation. Thus, even the own consumption is substantially reduced because the working medium does not have to be compressed but is only transported. Instead of a turbine a modified diesel engine is used for steam expansion.
