In the course of the lecture "Applied CFD Simulation" a group of 9 students and employees of the TUMCS visited the high-performance computing center of the LRZ. Dr. Thomas Frank gave the visitors an insight into the possibilities and computing capacities of the HPC systems at the site in Garching bei München. Special attention was paid to the parallelization of CFD simulations („computational fluid dynamics“). With about 20PFLOPS the SuperMUC is currently ranked 9th fastest known computer system and is mainly used for research projects. A tour through the premises of the computer center gave an impression of the hardware of an HPC system.
