Smartflower
Our solar flower "SmartFlower" is a 2-axis tracking compact photovoltaic system. The PV sheets are tracked automatically and time-controlled. In the evening it retracts its leaves and in the morning it extends them, automatically brushing off dust or snow from the surface. In strong winds, the system also retracts for safety reasons.
Due to the permanent orientation of the "blossom leaves" towards the sun, it achieves an annual yield of 5,000 kWh/a with 2.3 kWp even in our latitudes, which corresponds to around 2170 hours of full load. A fixed PV system only achieves around 1000 full-use hours. This results in slightly more than twice the yield per m² of PV collector area compared to a permanently installed system.
The system has about 12 m² monocrystalline cell area with 190 Wp per m². The generated electricity is fed directly into the supply of the campus and thus helps us to work and research more sustainably. The operating and yield data of this regenerative energy system will be part in further research projects.
